Diagnostic Equipment and Tools

Customer Complaint / Initial Condition

The vehicle was presented with warning messages on the instrument cluster:

• P-switch malfunction

• Gearbox failure warning lamp

These warnings were happening almost every time customer is pressing P switch.

Fault Code Scan (Before Repair)

A full diagnostic scan revealed the following stored fault codes:

• 02 – Transmission Control Module

o P085D00 – Selector Lever – Malfunction

• 0081 – Gearshift Module

o P18CB00 – Switch for Parking Lock – Implausible Signal

These fault codes are known to be associated with software-related issues in the electronic gear selector module on certain Audi A6 C8 vehicles.

Technical Background

According to DDTSB buletin, specific Audi A6 C8 vehicles may experience P-switch and gearbox warning messages caused by outdated software in the gearshift module (address 0081).

The bulletin explicitly instructs to perform a software update via ODIS using SVM code as a corrective action.

The transmission control module depends on valid selector position data from the gearshift module. When incorrect or implausible signals are detected, safety logic activates gearbox warnings even though no mechanical failure is present.

Repair Procedure

Based on the bulletin instructions, a software update of the gearshift module (0081) was carried out via SVM code 81A003. Important note: Before updating we did a ODIS test plan for fault codes and everything was working normally.

Key steps:

1. Stable voltage supply ensured using a Topdon T120A power support unit

2. Vehicle connected to ODIS via RLink Lite

3. Software update via SVM code in ‘’Flashing’’ performed for control unit 0081 – Gearshift Module

4. Programming completed successfully without communication or voltage interruptions

ODIS confirmed that the SVM action was executed successfully.

Result and Verification

After completing the software update:

• Fault memory was cleared

• System behavior was re-evaluated

• Test drive was done and after it, multiple P switch ON/OFFs

• Car is fault code free

Conclusion

This case demonstrates a software-related fault scenario on an Audi A6 C8 3.0 TDI Mild Hybrid, where P-switch and gearbox warning messages were caused by outdated gearshift module software. Following the manufacturer’s technical bulletin and performing the prescribed, via SVM code, software update resolved the issue.

It highlights the importance of:

• Consulting OEM technical bulletins

• Performing software updates as a diagnostic repair step

• Using stable power support during control unit programming

What a killer combination for programming, ODIS, Topdon’s RLink lite and T120a unit!
